Micron Semiconductor was established in 1983. Since this time we have become a leading manufacturer of silicon detectors for the High Energy Physics, Space, Nuclear and Medical Research markets. We specialise in producing custom AC and DC detectors and have designed and manufactured an estimated 250 individual designs over the past 25 years.

Micron on a tear despite numerous setbacks

SAN FRANCISCO (MarketWatch) — The last few months have been rough for Micron Technology, though that might not be so apparent from looking at the incredible run-up on the chipmaker’s stock price.

Micron (US:MU) has struggled with falling prices for its products and a market so wobbly it recently forced one of its rivals into bankruptcy. This on top of the tragic death of its well-regarded chief executive, who was killed in a plane crash in the company’s hometown of Boise, Idaho, last month.

It has had such a rough time recently that Micron is expected to swing to a loss when it reports second quarter earnings on Thursday, March 22. Analyst are expecting a loss of 19 cents, on revenue of $2 billion, compared with a profit of 7 cents a share, on revenue of $2.3 billion in the year-earlier period, according to FactSet Research.

But behind the dark clouds that have surrounded the Boise, Idaho-based chipmaker are signs of better times ahead.

This much is clear on Wall Street where the stock has soared roughly 40% since the beginning of the year, and more than 50% over the last three months. The shares were trading flat on midday Friday at $8.83.

The optimism is based on signs that the PC market is rebounding. More importantly, analysts see Micron emerging as a better-positioned player a rapidly shifting landscape in the market for DRAM memory chips — and in a fast-growing market for NAND Flash processors. ...

Micron Associates GRAVITO-MAGNETIC ORBITS FOR MICRON SIZED PARTICLES, L. B. Crowell

posted by johnsobber 65 days ago under micron associates, barcelona spain, gravito-magnetic orbits for micron sized particles, l-b-crowell
The two body dynamics of an orbiting particle is usually governed by Newton's
laws of gravity and mechanics. Here the Kepler problem has been studied with the
addition of the Lorentz force of magnetism. For micrometeoroids and small man made
debris particles electromagnetic interactions may become important. The space
environment is filled with charged particles, electrons and ions, that may be deposited on
a 1 - 100 microns sized particle. The orbits of such charged particles have been
modeled in earth orbit, with the dipole magnetic field superposed on the gravity field.
An initial study of this problem has been conducted. Figures 1 illustrates a 600
second time frame of particles in a 300 kilometer altitude Earth orbit with a 5.7'
inclination. The solid line is the pure Kepler problem. The dashed lines are the paths
taken by various sized particles with a single positive charge of 1.6x10-'~ coulombs.
The additional energy required to deflect these particles from a Kepler orbit
comes from the deposition of charge at the initial stage in the calculation. From there
the energy of the particle is conserved since both the gravitational and magnetic forces
are conservative, i.e. $F d r = 0.
The orbit of 1 micron sized particles has been computed and the results a r e
shown in figures 2 through 5. The results of this numerical exercise in magneto-orbital
dynamics...

Amazon hails era of \'utility supercomputing\'

posted by levifleur 66 days ago under micron associates, barcelona spain, amazon, supercomputing
LONDON, U.K. -- Cloud computing giant Amazon Web Services is heralding the era of utility supercomputing, whereby massive computational resources and storage requirements can be accessed on demand.

Speaking at the launch of Intel's Xeon E5 processor family in London this week, AWS technology evangelist in residence, Dr. Matt Wood, said that cloud computing was a utility service like electricity and gas, in that it allows consumers and businesses to pay for consumption of a service on demand.

The cloud's capacity for storing and processing Big Data is only limited by the infrastructure it sits on, explained Wood. While the technology can act as "friction", extending the time it takes to move from an idea to a result, more powerful processors are helping to reduce this lag time, opening up new opportunities for a whole range of industries.
In particular, scientific and financial organisations with massive computational demands will be able to rent resources from the cloud to be able to do their work - whether it happens to be product modelling, simulation or informatics - without having to invest in huge infrastructure.

"We are entering the era of utility supercomputing where anybody can dial up computational resources and massive storage requirements on the fly," said Wood. "Traditionally these organisations would have to provision for 10-15 percent over the peaks in demand, but the cloud allows for bursty scalability, lowering the...

Next-Gen, High-End Networking

Today, Micron and Xilinx jointly announced our hardware demonstration of an FPGA interfacing to RLDRAM® 3 memory.
For us, this announcement is exciting because it’s a great example of what’s possible when industry leaders collaborate.
More exciting and more important for our mutual customers is that this next-generation Virtex®-7 FPGA/RLDRAM 3 solution raises the bar for high-end networking performance by delivering 60% higher data rate and memory bandwidth than the previous platform (Virtex-6 FPGA/RLDRAM 2).
Check out the video below, where Derek Curd (Xilinx) and I demonstrate the FPGA/RLDRAM 3 memory interface and go over some of the device details that make this such a standout platform for next-gen, high-end networking.

5 signs you've lost control over cloud apps

posted by voletapryk 68 days ago under micron associates, barcelona spain, 5 signs you-ve lost control over cloud apps
FRAMINGHAM, Mass. -- CIOs are waking up to the reality that they've lost control over access to data stored in software-as-a-service applications purchased by other departments.

"By the time an organization buys its sixth or eighth SaaS application, it's in trouble," says Jackie Gilbert, vice-president and co-founder of SailPoint Technologies Inc., an Austin, Texas firm which sells software for bringing these applications back into compliance with company policy. "We're poised to see more auditor attention and more security directed at this problem."

Gilbert says that IT departments are discovering that they can't manage or control access to popular cloud applications such as Salesforce, GoogleApps, Concur, ADP, Workday, Taleo or Box if provisioning and de-provisioning is handled by the department that purchased the application.

SIDEBAR: Identity management in the cloud worries CIOs

"Because it's being done outside of IT, the kind of discipline and access control best practices do not normally get done," Gilbert says. "The more SaaS applications that an organization starts to adopt, the more they start to see security weaknesses crop up."

Here are a few of the most common signs that your identity and access management (IAM) solution isn't working when it comes to your growing portfolio of cloud applications:

New King of Hedge Funds: Ray Dalio Out-Earns Soros and Paulson

posted by jasonbreeks 69 days ago under micron associates, barcelona spain
There is a new reigning champion of hedge funds, based on total money earned for clients: Ray Dalio of Bridgewater Associates. His Pure Alpha fund at Bridgewater has earned investors a total of $35.8 billion since its launch in 1975, according to a report at the end of February from Leveraged Capital Holdings. (STAY AHEAD OF THE CURVE: Follow Kapitall on Twitter)
John Paulson and George Soros, two other well known contenders, still trail closely behind. Paulson had lost a crushing $9.6 billion in 2011, giving his Long-Term Capital Management net gains of $22.6 billion since its 1994 launch, according to Bloomberg Businessweek.
George Soros, who retired last year, and his fund Quantum Endowment Fund had net gains of $31.2 billion from 1973 through his retirement.
Although the hedge fund industry saw an average loss of 5.2% in 2011 according to Hedge Fund Research in Chicago, the industry is up 5% for the first two months of the year.
