Successful attacks by pirates are falling, in the past 12 months the number of hijacking attempts that have ended in triumph for Somali gangs has decreased dramatically with successful attacks falling from 45 to 24. This has been largely a result of the growing size and power of the global counter piracy, which comprises of a co-operative effort by several international navies, and this is emphasised by the fact that 120 hijacking attempts were halted during the last year.

One of the key incentives for private individuals and businesses considering cutting down on their energy usage by adopting solar power was the promise of government subsidies for those who took the step of installing panels in their homes or places of work. As of 1 August, however, the money given to anyone who installs solar panels – called a 'feed-in tariff' is set to be cut from the existing rate of 21p per KWh to just 16p – a reduction of around a quarter.
