OFAC is the Office of Foreign Asset Control, part of the U.S. Department of Treasury. OFAC is responsible for administering and enforcing economic and trade sanctions against certain nations, entities and individuals. OFAC maintains a listing of these restricted counter parties in a document called the "Specially Designated Nationals List" (SDN). They make this list available on their website.

The most important thing to do with OFAC is also the most simple: answer them. While it can be a very intimidating process, it is just best to give OFAC what they want so they can continue their investigation. Just make sure you go about it the right way and retain an attorney to help you.

An OFAC SDN List removal is an administrative matter. It is not a criminal matter, nor is it necessarily a civil matter. That means in the vast majority of cases a U.S. federal court will never be involved in the removal process.
