Why does the Corporate Media resent the Occupy Wall Street Movement?

posted by bluemoon22 32 days ago under occupy wall street, 99 percent, politics, corporate media
The majority of members in the corporate media disparage the Occupy Wall Street protesters as lacking focus and a definite aim. In the article Gunning for Wall Street, with Faulty Aim, the NY Times stated "group's lack of cohesion and its apparent wish to pantomime progressivism rather than practice it knowledgably is unsettling." Leuven from Belgium says the article attempted to portray protesters as naive, misguided youth haven taken to the streets to "assuage their adolescent boredom by pretending it is 1968."

In Wall Street Demonstrations Test Police Trained for Bigger Threats, Joseph Goldstein of the NY Times argues "to the NYPD, the protesters represented ... a visible example of lawlessness akin to that which had resulted in destruction and violence at other anti-capitalist demonstrations." Leuven says the "piece stops just short of suggesting that, because the much more malign threat posed by terrorists is among the NYPD’s main concerns, they should be forgiven for their disproportionate response to the 'unorganized and, at times, uninformed' Wall Street protesters."
In the video provided, Fox News is seen mocking the Occupy Wall Street protesters. Their show Red Eye attempts to portray the protesters as hippies, nude people, and pot smokers. Bill Schulz acts like an ass towards the protesters. He says stupid jokes and is in general just rude. Essentially, Fox was trying to make the protests seem as not serious. The station also tries to link the ...

Are Black and Latino neighborhoods treated like Occupied Territory?

According to The Call for the 16th Day of Protest to Stop Police Brutality, Repression, and the Criminalization of a Generation throughout "the U.S., Black, Latino, and poor neighborhoods are treated like occupied territory by increasingly militarized armies of law enforcement. People are criminalized and brutalized for their perceived status – socioeconomic, immigration, mental health, and/or racial, gender, or sexual identity. People living in our communities, especially youth, are routinely stopped, harassed, beaten, and even killed." It lists the following examples:
In Chicago, the home of the first Black president, police have shot 44 people so far this year, mostly youth of color, including 13-year-old Jimmell Cannon, who was shot eight times.
NYPD continues to stop hundreds of thousands of youth of color every year for the most minimal suspicion, fewer than 10% of which result in arrest, and far fewer in charges or conviction.
Police nationwide continue to kill with very little consequence. Twelve Miami cops shot at 22-year-old Raymond Herisse 100 times, then threatened those who recorded the incident, destroying their cellphones. A Tucson SWAT team shot at 26-year-old Iraq War veteran Jose Guerena over 70 times, claiming that he fired at them and then leaving him to bleed to death in his home. Both their allegations of gunfire and drug-dealing were later revealed to be false. In New York and New Jersey, at least 28 people have been killed by police...

Does the Stop and Frisk policy of the police need to end?

On October 21, 2011, a new movement aimed at ending the Stop & Frisk policy of the NYPD. Hundreds of people marched from Harlem's State Office Building to Harlem's 28th precinct.

Car Dix of the Revolutionary Communist Party stated at the protest "We are here today to put our bodies on the line to stop this racist, immoral, illegitimate and unjust ‘new Jim Crow’ from the gateway of stop and frisk to the wholesale mass incarceration of Black and Brown people." He continued "We are serious and we will continue until we Stop Stop & Frisk!"

According to the NYCLU, "the NYPD’s stop-and-frisk practices raise serious concerns over racial profiling, illegal stops and privacy rights. The Department’s own reports on its stop-and-frisk activity confirm what many people in communities of color across the city have long known: The police are stopping hundreds of thousands of law abiding New Yorkers every year, and the vast majority are black and Latino." NYCLU continues saying "during the first six months of 2011, 362,150 New Yorkers were stopped by the police. 317,376 were totally innocent (88 percent), 184,186 were black (51 percent), 119,853 were Latino (33 percent), and 33,805 were white (9 percent)"

Does the name of Sarah Silverman's show undermine its message?

posted by bluemoon22 33 days ago under sarah silverman, racism, rick perry, politics, herman cain
Sarah Silverman is hosting a comedy show titled "Live from N*****head: Stripping the Paint Off Of Good Ol' Fashioned Racism." Silverman's fellow comics will be involved, proceeds will go to the NAACP, and the event will take place in Republican presidential candidate Rick Perry's home state of Texas. Of course, the name comes from Perry's family hunting ground, first reported by the Washington Post at the beginning of October and much discussed since then. Perry has said it's an "offensive name that has no place in the modern world."

Asked about the title of her comedy show, Silverman told EW, "“This is a never-forget moment. The show’s provocative name holds a mirror up to an ugliness that seems to have become yesterday’s news without having barely even made news.” She also explains that using the loaded N-word in the title of a show to benefit a civil rights organization draws on "the positive thing about N-head and other outwardly racist actions...Like trying to put the Confederate flag on Texas license plates, it's no longer just a gas in the air. It's something you can point it. It's something you can fight against and expose. So I see this as an opportunity that should be taken."

Jezebel asks, "But is Sarah Silverman the best person to hold the mirror? She made headlines ten years ago, when describing getting out of jury duty. She joked that a friend suggested writing "I hate chinks" on her paperwork. "I wanted to do it, but then, I'm l...

10/18/2011 GOP Debate - Border Fence Policy

posted by bluemoon22 36 days ago under elections, politics, republican, gop, president
One big issue discussed in the GOP debate on 10/18/2011 in Las Vegas, NV was how the candidates would deal with illegal immigration. CNN's Anderson Cooper opened the first question of this series to Herman Cain by simply asking if Cain would attempt to build a border fence across the entire border between the US and Mexico?

Herman Cain
"Yes, I believe we should secure the border for real, and it would be a combination of a fence, technology, as well as possibly boots on the ground for some of the more dangerous areas. I don’t apologize at all for wanting to protect the American citizens and to protect our agents on the border, no. Secondly, the second thing that I would do — see, I believe in let’s solve the whole problem. We must shut the back door so people can come in the front door. Secondly, promote the existing path to citizenship by cleaning up the bureaucracy in Washington, D.C.Thirdly, enforce the laws — the immigration laws that are already on the books. And here’s another one of these bold ideas by the non-politician up here. Empower the states to do what the federal government is not doing in terms of enforcing those laws."

Rick Perry
After Cain's response, Cooper asks Governor Perry whether it was "possible to build a fence...across the entire border" of Texas? Perry replied that you could build a fence, "but it takes anywhere between 10 and 15 years and $30 billion. There’s a better way, and that’s to build a...

10/18/2011 GOP Debate - Occupy Wall Street Impressions

posted by bluemoon22 36 days ago under elections, politics, republican, gop, president
During the Republican Primary Debate, the candidates received a question via twitter that asked: "How do you explain the Occupy Wall Street movement happening across the country? And how does it relate with your message?" CNN's Anderson Cooper opens this question with Herman Cain because "two weeks ago, [he] said 'Don't blame Wall Street, don't blame the big banks. If you don't have a job, and you're not rich, blame yourself.' That was two weeks ago. The movement has grown. Do you still say that?"

Herman Cain
Cain quickly answered, "Yes, I do still say that. And here’s why...They might be frustrated with Wall Street and the bankers, but they’re directing their anger at the wrong place. Wall Street didn’t put in failed economic policies. Wall Street didn’t spend a trillion dollars that didn’t do any good. Wall Street isn’t going around the country trying to sell another $450 billion. They ought to be over in front of the White House taking out their frustration. So I do stand by them." (See 1st paragraph under Paul before reading the 2nd paragraph under Cain.)

In response to Paul's first paragraph below: "All I want to say is that representative Paul is partly right, but he’s mixing problems here. It’s more than one problem. Look, the people — the banks — yes, the banks and the businesses on Wall Street, yes, the way that was administered was not right. But my point is this: What are the people who are protesting want from ...

President Obama bids to avert the Palestinian Vote at the UN - Is this in the Best Interest of the US?

Listen to the video below (from MorningJoe.com) concerning the discussion of President Obama's actions towards the Palestinians moving forward with their bid at the UN to vote for their statehood. In the video, Maen Areikat, the Chief Palestinian Negotiator to the US, argues the purpose of going forward in the UN vote is to create an equal playing field for the Palestinians at the negotiation table with the Israeli's.

President Obama has been scrambling around in attempt to avert this from occurring. The main video, provided by the AP, explains how Obama is actually trying to end the entire process from occurring. The President is also believed to most likely vote against the Palestinian state.

Ereikat says if America does anything but vote for the Palestinian state at the UN, it will be viewed as a move to derail and prevent the Palestinians from moving forward. The Palestinian-Israeli conflict is the single most important issue for America in the Middle East. America has historically been viewed as biased and the enabler of the world's oldest occupation - the Israeli Military Occupation of Palestine. Osama bin Laden cited the US's involvement in the Conflict as one of the main driving forces behind al Qaeda's motivation.

Is Google Treating Anti-Gay GOP Candidate Rick Santorum Unfairly?

Former U.S. Senator Rick Santorum is sick of the disgusting associations with his name. No, not his political beliefs: the hilarious campaign launched by columnist and gay rights activist Dan Savage in retaliation for Santorum's aggressive anti-gay messages. (If you're not in the know, a simple Google search reveals all here, but be forewarned that the material is not necessarily work safe despite its tactful description of a rather unpleasant sexual matter.)

On Tuesday, the pouty Republican presidential hopeful publicly scolded Google while asserting not only that they could remove the unsavory search result but may be more inclined to do so if he were a left-leaning sort.

Geez.

According to thirdage.com, Santorum told Politico in an interview, “I suspect if something was up there like that about Joe Biden, they'd get rid of it. If you're a responsible business, you don't let things like that happen in your business that have an impact on the country. To have a business allow that type of filth to be purveyed through their website or through their system is something that they say they can't handle, but I suspect that's not true.”

In response, a Google spokesman told CNN in an email, “Google's search results
