SAN FRANCISCO, May 27 (Xinhua) - Google on Friday said it will defend itself against allegations by PayPal that the Internet search giant and two of its executives stole trade secrets to develop its mobile payment system.

PayPal's lawsuit came on Thursday, hours after Google announced its mobile payment system Google Wallet and laid out plans to bring together all parts of retail experience on smartphones.

"We respect trade secrets and will defend ourselves against these claims,” said Google in a statement sent to media here.

The two executives named in the PayPal lawsuit are Osama Bedier and Stephanie Tilenius, two ex-PayPal executives who now directly oversee Google's mobile payment initiative. Both were on stage in Thursday's introduction event held in New York.

PayPal said Bedier, who left the company in January, discussed a job with Google while simultaneously leading negotiations to make PayPal a payment option on Google's Android-based smartphones.

Bedier is alleged to have transferred the information about PayPal's mobile payment strategy to his computer before leaving the company.

Tilenius, who left eBay, PayPal's mother company in 2009, was under contract not to recruit PayPal employees. She is alleged to give advices to Bedier on a Google offering through Facebook messages, e-mails and text messages.

"Silicon Valley was built on the ability of individuals to use their knowledge and expertise to seek better employment opportunities, an idea recognized by both California law and public policy,” said Google in the statement.

Google on Thursday introduced its mobile payment system Google Wallet, bundled with its coupon service Google Offers. The two services will allow consumers with Android smartphones to make payments or receive coupons and offers by waving the device in front of a special reader at the checkout counter.

1 Vote(s)

Zurich Financial Services Group says it has signed a definitive agreement with Banco Santander SA to buy a majority interest in the bank's Latin America insurance operations.

The Zurich, Switzerland-based insurer says the agreement is "materially unchanged from what was announced” on Feb. 22.

The carrier went on to say that it and Madrid, Spain-based Banco Santander expect the transaction to be completed before the end of this year.

Earlier this year, Zurich announced it signed a 25-year distribution agreement with Banco Santander where it would acquire 51 percent of the bank's insurance business in Latin America and Santander would keep the remaining 49 percent.

Zurich will pay Santander $1.67 billion in a combination cash and financed deal for its book of business.

The insurer will have access to 5,600 bank branches and an additional 36 million customers in five South American countries.

Thirty percent of the business is general insurance, primarily homeowners insurance, and the bulk of the rest is in life products.

In 2010, Santander's Latin American insurance operations delivered a net profit of $328 million.

Zurich says the deal would make the company the 6th largest non-life insurer in the region, increasing its market share in the region to 3 percent. Once complete, Zurich becomes the 3rd largest life insurer in the region and the 4th largest insurer overall in Latin America.

1 Vote(s)

The letter or email hits your inbox with an offer of service, and the concluding sentence that says this person you don't know is going to call next week to discuss these important matters with you.

Please don't, ok?

The cold call is older than fictional salesman Willy Loman-and less effective, particularly for consultants. A cold call campaign is founded on the one-two punch theory of sales. First, you send out a stack of "enticing” letters to people you don't know, and second, you call them and solicit their business.

The underlying logic of the campaign is that having a large number of targets will work in your favor. You know that most of your calls will result in failure, but you hope a small percentage of those you contact will agree to meet with you. And from that group, some small percentage will want to discuss a proposal, and a smaller percentage may hire you.

What's Wrong with this Picture?

If you're selling aluminum siding, investments, or cell phone service, maybe nothing is wrong with that strategy. But most consultants would rather work for free than make a cold call. Placing a call to a complete stranger to make an offer is self-serving, not client-serving.

Your call is a solution in search of a problem, and everyone knows it. You can be sure that if you do make contact, that person's guard will be way up.

"The cold call is older than fictional salesman Willy Loman-and less effective, particularly for consultants.”
Cold callers are lucky if they get through toanyone of significance. You're more likely to reach gatekeepers and tire kickers, not decision makers. And remember, most direct mail is thrown away or ends up in a spam folder before it's opened. So don't be surprised if the person answering your call has no idea who you are or why you're calling.

Even if you're fortunate enough to reach a decision maker and your message is well-received, that doesn't necessarily help you. In the consulting business, most service buyers obtain recommendations from colleagues on which consultants to hire. So, it's possible that your call will give the prospective client a great idea and, because you are an unknown, that client will hire someone else to do the work.

An Offer They Can Refuse

A cold calling operation wastes valuable time and energy. Before you can experience the joys of cold calling, you must have a data base of prospects, a targeted letter, a phone script, and time to place your calls. You also need a good system for call scheduling, tracking, and follow-up. But don't forget to put on your hard hat because most people are just going to say no.

Like everything in the consulting business, you'll find an exception to any rule. It's possible to find consultants who swear by the effectiveness of cold calling. For some professionals, cold calling is at the center of their lead generation strategy.

For most consultants, though, cold calling is best suited for initial introductions. And it takes a fair amount of time to get those prospects into the sales pipeline.

I think of cold calling as a spaghetti strategy: "Let's throw it all against the wall and see what sticks.” It's a high effort, low success numbers game that begins with the false assumption that you can identify your real prospects without knowing them, or their issues.

"Sir, Step away from the Phone!”

1 Vote(s)

In a significant victory for the Financial Services Board (FSB), controversial Pretoria-based financial services company Dynamic Wealth, which has been mired in legal battles with the regulator and dissatisfied investors, closed its doors this week.

The closure follows a determination by the FSB Appeal Board to reject Dynamic Wealth's appeal against a decision by Dube Tshidi, the Registrar of Financial Services Providers and the FSB's chief executive, to withdraw the financial services provider (FSP) licences of two of its subsidiaries, Dynamic Wealth Management and Dynamic Wealth Stockbrokers.

An immediate consequence of the Appeal Board's decision is that Metropolitan Collective Investments has taken control of the seven unit trust funds that Dynamic Wealth managed and marketed using Metropolitan's collective investment schemes licence (see "Investors' money in unit trusts ‘should be safe'”, below).

Commenting on the status of Dynamic Wealth, Cobus van Wyk, the company's chief executive, says "we are for all practical purposes closed for business, as the company cannot do financial services business, and all assets that were managed have been (or are in the process of being) transferred”.

The FSB is still waging a court battle to place various Dynamic entities under curatorship.

Last year, Dynamic successfully challenged an application by the FSB to place the company under curatorship. The FSB has taken the High Court's decision on appeal, which is still to be heard.

Dynamic Wealth initially attracted the attention of the FSB when one of its investment offerings started to go sour, which led to the curatorship application.

Some years before the FSB took action against Dynamic, Personal Finance had dealt with complaints from disappointed investors.

High-profile forensic investigator David Klatzow had taken up cases on behalf of investors, who claimed that Dynamic misled them into making incorrect investments.

1 Vote(s)

http://www.reuters.com/article/2011/06/22/us-hulu-idUSTRE75K6XW20110622

(Reuters) - Online video site Hulu has been approached by a potential buyer and is weighing whether to sell itself, according to a person familiar with the matter.

Hulu is best known for offering free online access to popular TV shows from its strategic owners but last July launched a paid subscription service as a way to expand its offerings to include TV shows from other programing partners like Viacom.

The approach presents another decision point for the jointly owned company, which has shown an unclear strategy and last year spent six months planning an initial public offering before dropping the plan.

The development has encouraged the Hulu board to engage with the banking community to help handle the approach from the "serious” buyer and other potential offers, the person said.

Hulu is jointly owned by News Corp, Walt Disney Co, NBC Universal and private equity firm Providence Equity Partners.

The acquisition approach has not been made by any of the current equity holders, the person said. The buyer is expected to be either a strategic buyer or private equity. No decision has been made about whether the board is prepared to sell the company or not.

Though Hulu has been immensely popular with users, its owners have come under increasing pressure from their cable and satellite distribution partners reluctant to pay premium dollars to carry content that is being offered for free on the Web.

Added to that has been the unwillingness of many program makers to put their shows up on a free site with an advertising model that is yet to prove itself with premium video.

Hulu's stiffest competition online is from Netflix, which now has more than 20 million paying subscribers in the United States.

Last year, Hulu had been planning to raise $200 million to $300 million in a public offering that would have valued the company at about $2 billion.
