The pall of Europe's debt crisis is obscuring evidence that the rest of the global economy is in decent shape. Stock markets slumped Friday after European finance ministers said the Greek government must take more steps to secure further aid, triggering the departure of six ministers from Prime Minister Lucas Papademos's cabinet and fuelling violent street protests in Athens. But away from the noise and confusion of European capitals, and contrary to the outlooks of gloomy Wall Street forecasters, U.S. companies are steadily hiring and investing, generating momentum that will help offset whatever harm comes from Europe's troubles. While Greece plunged deeper into chaos, the U.S. Commerce Department released data showing U.S. imports surged at the end of 2011, the latest signal that the world's largest economy finally is on track for a lasting recovery.

1 Vote(s)

The Little White Church On The Corner - Celebrating its 150th anniversary in 2008, East Chesterfield Christian Church welcomes you. We are located 5 miles outside the town of Lyons, in a beautiful rural setting. Sunday worship is at 9:oo am.

Communion is held every Sunday. As is the custom of the Disciples of Christ, all who believe that Jesus Christ is the true Son of God whose death and resurrection gives us salvation from sin, are welcome to participate in the Lord's Supper.

East Chesterfield Christian Church - History
It all started in 1857 when L. L. Carpenter and James Hadsell held meetings in the Maple Grove Schoolhouse, then situated on the northwest corner of the Philip Roos farm in Chesterfield Township. At times the services were held in the barn of the Roos homestead. In the following year, April 1858 the church was organized.
The church at the onset was a strong one. There were 70 charter members. A few of the names were Mr. and Mrs. Philip Roos, George Roos, Mr. and Mrs. Levi Terry, Mrs. Sarah Wait Sheffield and her son Fred.

A meeting was called by Rev. J. C. Goodrich for the purpose of organizing a society to build a meeting house. Plyn Harden, James Onweller and J. P. Roos were appointed trustees, George Roos as treasurer. Seven years later in 1865 the house of worship was built.

6 Vote(s)

BLACKSBURG - The alert today at Virginia Tech not only affected the school, but also all of Blacksburg.

Several people in downtown Blacksburg said the area was a complete ghost town.

Lia Deoliveira used her down time to take care of business around her salon. Most of her day was actually spent tying up loose ends.

"I got kind of scared and kind of nervous,” Deoliveira said.

As she waited for information, she also waited for customers. Even though the sign said open, very few walked in.

Virginia Tech's alert also trickled down to a sushi restaurant around the block.

"There are eight tables in here and they're always full, but today the most we had were five at once,” said Ben Woody, one of the restaurant's servers.

Woody said students usually stop in after class, but says he understands the fact everyone was erring on the side of caution.

"Whenever something happens, a lot of people in the Blacksburg area have a heighten sense of concern for their welfare here and anything like today that says ‘stay alert' it makes everybody a little edgy,” Woody said.

After looking like a ghost town for several hours, downtown finally picked up late in the afternoon. People could be seen walking from shop to shop and the street was once again packed with cars.

Business owners are crossing their fingers the gun scare doesn't keep customers away over the weekend. The big ”Steppin' Out” arts and crafts music festival is Friday and Saturday, and it attracts hundreds of people to the downtown area.

Businesses owners say if the gun scare had happened during that time, it would have created even more panic in the downtown area. So, they're glad that didn't happen.

3 Vote(s)

Making the decision to hire a financial adviser is often a tough one for many investors. Once you've made this decision, how do you go about finding the right adviser for you? Here are six questions to ask:

How are you compensated? While one could argue that no method of adviser compensation is totally without bias, fee-only advisers come the closest. Fee-only advisers receive no compensation from the sale of investment or insurance products. Can an adviser who receives a significant portion of their compensation from the sale of financial products really be counted on to recommend solutions that are in your best interest?

[See 50 Best Funds for the Everyday Investor.]

Will my assets be housed with an independent third-party custodian? This applies if the adviser will be providing on-going investment advice. Examples of third-party custodians include Charles Schwab, Fidelity, TD Ameritrade, and most other brokerage firms and mutual fund companies. A third-party custodian provides periodic (monthly or at least quarterly) statements independent of any reports provided by the adviser. Bernie Madoff's failure to use an independent custodian enabled him to defraud investors for so many years. If an adviser tells you that you don't need this type of arrangement, end the meeting and leave immediately. This is a deal-killer and should raise many red flags.

Do you have experience working with clients whose situation is similar to ours? Ask the adviser about their client base. If you are a corporate employee looking for help planning for the exercise of your stock options, you should ask the adviser about their knowledge and experience in dealing with clients like you. For example, an adviser who deals primarily with teachers might not be the right choice for you. Likewise if the adviser's typical client has a minimum of $1 million to invest and your portfolio is more modest, this adviser might not be a good fit for you.

[See In Pictures: 6 Numbers You Should Follow.]

What services do you provide? If the adviser's primary service is investment advice and you are looking for a financial planner to construct a comprehensive financial plan for you, this adviser is likely not a good match.

Do you have any conflicts of interest that influence the advice you provide? Financial advisers who are registered representatives will often be incentivized to sell insurance or annuity products promoted by their broker dealer. Ask how they select the financial and investment products they recommend to clients. Ask them directly about all forms of compensation they will receive from working with you, and if they will disclose this information on an ongoing basis. Ask them if there are any restrictions regarding the products they can recommend.

[See In Pictures: 5 Ways to Measure Investment Risk.]

Do you act in a fiduciary capacity towards your clients? In laymen's terms, you are asking if the adviser is obligated to put your interests first. The brokerage industry uses the suitability standard, but this falls far short in this regard. This argument continues in the financial services industry as the regulators work through this issue.

The questions listed above are just a few of the many questions you should ask when choosing a new adviser or an adviser with whom you currently have a relationship. As an investor, it is ultimately up to you to select the right adviser. Do your homework and due diligence. The National Association of Personal Financial Advisers (NAPFA), the largest professional organization of fee-only advisers, has a new guide to selecting an adviser called "Pursuit of a Financial Adviser Field Guide,” which is an excellent resource for those seeking the help of a financial adviser.

35 Vote(s)
