Shaw Capital Management Factoring >>Warning: Phishing Scam Takes a Legal Twist

Better Business Bureau of Southern Arizona is warning consumers against giving out personal information to unknown callers. Scammers have recently been using the name of legitimate law firms to trick victims across the country into giving out bank information, credit card numbers and other private information.

Victims report receiving calls from individuals using a fake name and an untraceable phone number, who say they work with a law firm in the victim’s area.

The callers claim the firm is suing the victim on behalf of a payday loan provider. The caller goes on to say the victim defaulted on a loan and demands payment and other personal information. Victims may not remember taking out such a loan, but some cases have been linked to security breaches at financial institutions.

There are other variations of this scam. Callers pretend to be law enforcement or government officials collecting on a range of outstanding debts, from loans to traffic tickets. Should the potential victim refuse to pay, the scammers threaten anything from a lawsuit to arrest.

Hundreds of people around the country have reported falling victim to these types of scams. In order to protect your personal information, BBB offers the following tips:

Demand proof. The caller should identify who they are and, upon request, provide you with a telephone nu...

Penny Dreadful Productions (PDP) has successful grand opening on Main Street in Duluth. Congratulations Penny Dreadful Productions (PDP) on the successful grand opening of The Boiler Room, the first American Steampunk store and studio, last Saturday (May 21) on Main Street in Historic Downtown Duluth. What a day of festivities starting with the doors opening at 10 a.m. to find Danny Hunter of Buford as the first patron in line. A Dragoncon and Steampunk fan, Danny was interested in having PDP make a Steampunk costume he conceptually designed. Danny was impressed with the store and studio and suggested that other Steampunkers must check it out. Erin Bushko, co-founder of PDP, welcomed the guests and introduced Duluth Mayor Nancy Harris.

A judge issued an arrest warrant Tuesday for aBartlett woman who had tried to collect on an insurance policy by claiming her husband was an FBI agent killed in the line of duty.
Bridgette Buckner, 50, failed to appear at her sentencing hearing in DuPage County court, where earlier this summer she had pleaded guilty to insurance fraud.
In court Tuesday, Judge John Kinsella asked Buckner attorney Matthew Hachigian where his client was.
“I wish I could tell you, your honor,” Hachigian replied.
Kinsella issued a no-bond warrant for Buckner, meaning that she will be held without bail should authorities find her.
Buckner also failed to appear in Cook County court last week to face a 14-count indictment for identity theft brought by the Illinois Attorney General’s office. Assistant Attorney General Anshuman Vaidya said the Cook indictments allege Buckner used fake identities to charge goods and services.
In DuPage, Buckner was charged after she submitted a fake death certificate for her husband in September 2008 in an attempt to obtain $15,000 in workplace insurance benefits, just five months after collecting on the same policy for the death of her child.
At the time, Buckner worked at Hallmark Services, a health insurance administrator that is part of the Blue Cross system. The two claims aroused the suspicions of corporate security officials, who questioned Buckner, who, in turn, told the story of her FBI agent husband being shot to ...

A phone-hacking scandal centered on Rupert Murdoch’s News Corp cost Britain’s top policeman his job and renewed questions on Monday about Prime Minister David Cameron’s judgment. In another major development in a scandal that has shaken Britons’ faith in the police, press and political leaders, detectives arrested Rebekah Brooks, former head of News Corp’s British newspaper arm, on suspicion of intercepting communications and corruption. The flame-haired Brooks, who once edited the News of the World tabloid, was released on bail at midnight on Sunday, about 12 hours after she went to a London police station to be arrested, her spokesman said. Brooks has denied any wrongdoing. Analysts said the gathering pace of heads rolling had turned up the heat on Cameron and Murdoch over their handling of the scandal, with the media tycoon due to be questioned by parliament in a possible showdown on Tuesday.
