How Gundersen Lutheran Health System Will Be Energy Independent by 2014

Imagine, for a moment, a hospital that is able to provide its own energy through new renewable energy projects like biofuels and solar power and improved energy efficiency efforts. In other words, the hospital will never have to pay another energy bill again. Sounds a little far-fetched, right?

Well, it's not far-fetched at all. In fact, officials at Gundersen Lutheran Health System in La Crosse, Wis., are trying to make their health system 100 percent energy independent — meaning they will be completely self-sufficient on all their energy needs — by 2014.

Biomass Energy Co-operative secures first contract

fedsxR5L7Business is hotting-up for a new Bury-based energy co-operative which has secured its first contract. The organisation will install a biomass boiler and viewing room at a church and social club in Ellesmere Port, Merseyside.

Following a chance discussion at a football game, Grant Miller, Chris O'Connor and Ricky Davies registered as a co-operative, with support from The Co-operative Enterprise Hub, and set about turning their 'energy' for renewables into their day job.

Over a 20 year period it is predicted that the church's investment in its new energy system – through funds provided by the government's Renewable Heat Incentive – will see a return that not only covers installation and fuel costs, but also generates a surplus income of over £130,000.

The biomass boiler will burn locally sourced wood shavings and pellets. It is estimated that this will reduce the church's CO2 emissions by more than 580 tonnes over 20 years. Ash produced will be given to horticulturalists as a component for composts.

In addition to providing energy savings, the focus of the Biomass Energy Co-operative is to promote a transition to a lower carbon economy while contributing to wider environmental improvements. It offers a free feasibility study service and supplies and installs the latest heating systems to commercial buildings, residential homes, schools, community buildings and large domestic properties across the north west. ...

How to... save energy without breaking the bank

posted by siddneychen 3 days ago under solamon energy, solamon energy canada news, how to-save energy without breaking the bank
Energy-saving products have come a long way since the brick-in-the-cistern days, yet some things such as draught excluders remain just as good an idea today as they were hundreds of years ago. One thing that's certain is that gas and electricity bills are going up constantly, so it pays to make use of smart innovations and old tricks alike if you want to stay one step ahead of the energy companies. It's easy to overlook all the little things around the home - radiators, windows, even your letterbox - that could do with a little help to make your home as efficient as possible but that doesn’t mean you should. Here’s how to save money and the planet at the same time:

Radiators
Radiators aren’t always the most efficient way to heat a house but there are quite a few products out there that can make them a bit more so - and save you cash on your heating bills. Most are mounted on walls, which means they lose quite a bit of heat through the wall itself - even more if you don't have cavity wall insulation. Heat-reflecting foil is a simple way around this. Rolls of combined insulating and heat-reflecting foil can be found at most major DIY chains, and can make a big difference to your home's efficiency if applied to all radiators around the house.

Another solution is Ecofreak.co.uk's Radiator Booster MK3, £24.95, which effectively turns your radiator into a convection heater by using a miniature fan to distribute warm air more evenly around th...

Oil investment defendant seeks dismissal of SEC suit, contends feds lack jurisdiction
Attorneys for a Florida man accused of masterminding a $25 million oil-well investment fraud that preyed on overseas investors have asked federal Judge Sam Cummings to dismiss a lawsuit.
Attorneys for a Florida man accused of masterminding a $25 million oil-well investment fraud that preyed on overseasinvestors have asked federal Judge Sam Cummings to dismiss a lawsuit filed just more than a year ago by the Securities and Exchange Commission.
Attorneys for Justin Solomon filed a motion late Tuesday in U.S. District Court in Lubbock arguing the judge should throw out the case, based on a U.S. Supreme Court decision sharply restricting the SEC's reach in overseas securities disputes where activities within the United States may have played a minor role in the alleged fraudulent activities.
Additionally, Solomon's lawyers say, even if the alleged frauds - which involved boiler room sales operations in Costa Rica and Thailand - occurred, the SEC's original complaint fails to show Solomon ever made any misleading or fraudulent statements.

Office Depot, celebrating 25 years as a leading global provider of office supplies and services, today announced that the company’s global headquarters, located in Boca Raton, Fla., has earned the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA’s) ENERGY STAR certification. The certification signifies that the building performs in the top 25 percent of similar facilities nationwide for energy efficiency and meets strict energy efficiency performance levels set by the EPA.

“Office Depot is pleased to accept EPA’s ENERGY STAR certification in recognition of our energy efficiency efforts,” said Edward Costa, Vice President of Construction for Office Depot. “Through this achievement, we have demonstrated our commitment to environmental stewardship while also lowering our energy costs.”

Commercial buildings that earn EPA’s ENERGY STAR certification use an average of 35 percent less energy than typical buildings and also release 35 percent less carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. Office Depot improved its energy performance by managing energy strategically across the entire organization and by making cost-effective improvements to its building.

“Improving the energy efficiency of our nation’s buildings is critical to protecting our environment,” said Jean Lupinacci, Chief of the ENERGY STAR Commercial & Industrial Branch. “From the boiler room to the board room, organizations are leading the way by making their buildings ...

Updated HVAC plant boosts carbon initiative to reduce energy usage

posted by yuandrisovitzz 8 days ago under solamon energy, solamon energy canada news
In designing the HVAC control system, Kestrel has chosen Schneider Electric’s TeSys U motor starter controllers for all the pumps and motors.

The scheme to update the HVAC plant is in line with Bupa’s carbon initiative designed to reduce energy usage under the carbon levy scheme, which encourages businesses to reduce emissions by adding an energy tax on energy bills. The key requirement for the system is remote management, which will enable all of the HVAC installations to be monitored and controlled at Bupa’s central support office in Leeds.

Engineer Oliver Ringrose of Kestrel, who had not previously used the TeSys model U range, explains: “We are using Honeywell Hawk controllers on a Modbus network to integrate the HVAC systems and were looking for a quick-fit solution capable of being connected onto a Modbus network for the motor controllers. It was our Honeywell contact, who had experience of the TeSys U starters in an industrial automation application, who recommended them and they have delivered everything we were looking for.”

Use of the TeSys U connected to the HVAC system enables the state of the motor starters to be constantly monitored by indicating motor load and whether they are on, off or tripped. It means that Bupa can ensure that the plant in each of its homes is operating to pre-determined parameters, identifying unnecessary usage or unauthorised changes to manual operation. By being able to remotely mo...
