Mecanum wheel is capable of moving in any direction using a standard chassis shape. Mounting mecanum wheels in the traditional fore-and-after orientation allows another inch or two of room between the front wheels which can be critical in designing a competition robot, especially in a game like Clean Sweep which has large game objects.
