Dec. 1 (Bloomberg) — European stocks swung between gains and losses as concern that the debt crisis is spreading and China’s economy is slowing offset auction results that showed investor demand continues for Spanish and French debt. U.S. index futures were little changed, while Asian shares rose.
Novartis AG and Roche Holding AG led health-care companies higher, gaining at least 1.5 percent. Hochtief AG and Vinci SA declined after an airport deal between them fell through. Norsk Hydro ASA dropped 1.1 percent after predicting aluminum demand growth will weaken. The Stoxx 600 gained 0.1 percent to 240.41 at 1:28 p.m. in London after earlier falling as much as 0.8 percent. The gauge has advanced 8.5 percent this week as euro-area leaders agreed to insure sovereign-bond issues and central banks eased dollar funding for banks. The December contract on the Standard & Poor’s 500 Index retreated less than 0.1 percent. The MSCI Asia Pacific Index jumped 3.2 percent. MANCHESTER: British Prime Minister David Cameron said Sunday that the eurozone had to get on with fixing its financial problems or risk pulling down the entire world economy.
Speaking in Manchester, northwest England, before the start of his governing Conservative Party’s annual conference, Cameron said eurozone leaders must “roll up their sleeves” as they only had weeks to get it right. “Frankly, right now the eurozone is a threat not just to itself, but also a threat to the British economy, but a threat to the worldwide economy and so we have to deal with this,” he told BBC television. He added now was not the time for a British referendum on whether to stay in or leave the 27-member European Union — a subject which may be debated in the next session of parliament. The Zurich Statistics Office is keeping residents amused and entertained by revealing fresh nuggets of information about the city each week.
It’s Advent all year round for Marc Schneider, the head of the Statistics Office in Zurich. Every Monday, he ‘opens’ a little window on the office’s homepage in an attempt to attract visitors. Schneider wants to show citizens there is a world of knowledge and intrigue behind numbers that at first glance may seem boring. For instance, by clicking on the ‘number of the week’, Zurich citizens can discover that: - 32 cents was the cost of the cheapest item on sale in Zurich in 2009. It was the price for an egg from a foreign farm. - 76 of the 275 banks with operations in Switzerland were headquartered in Zurich. - 166 nations were represented among Zurich’s residents in 2009. « previous next » |
