The pall of Europe’s debt crisis is obscuring evidence that the rest of the global economy is in decent shape. Stock markets slumped Friday after European finance ministers said the Greek government must take more steps to secure further aid, triggering the departure of six ministers from Prime Minister Lucas Papademos’s cabinet and fuelling violent street protests in Athens. But away from the noise and confusion of European capitals, and contrary to the outlooks of gloomy Wall Street forecasters, U.S. companies are steadily hiring and investing, generating momentum that will help offset whatever harm comes from Europe’s troubles. While Greece plunged deeper into chaos, the U.S. Commerce Department released data showing U.S. imports surged at the end of 2011, the latest signal that the world’s largest economy finally is on track for a lasting recovery.

The Little White Church On The Corner - Celebrating its 150th anniversary in 2008, East Chesterfield Christian Church welcomes you. We are located 5 miles outside the town of Lyons, in a beautiful rural setting. Sunday worship is at 9:oo am.
Communion is held every Sunday. As is the custom of the Disciples of Christ, all who believe that Jesus Christ is the true Son of God whose death and resurrection gives us salvation from sin, are welcome to participate in the Lord's Supper. East Chesterfield Christian Church - History It all started in 1857 when L. L. Carpenter and James Hadsell held meetings in the Maple Grove Schoolhouse, then situated on the northwest corner of the Philip Roos farm in Chesterfield Township. At times the services were held in the barn of the Roos homestead. In the following year, April 1858 the church was organized. The church at the onset was a strong one. There were 70 charter members. A few of the names were Mr. and Mrs. Philip Roos, George Roos, Mr. and Mrs. Levi Terry, Mrs. Sarah Wait Sheffield and her son Fred. A meeting was called by Rev. J. C. Goodrich for the purpose of organizing a society to build a meeting house. Plyn Harden, James Onweller and J. P. Roos were appointed trustees, George Roos as treasurer. Seven years later in 1865 the house of worship was built. Opes Capital: Company Announcement: ZYL appoints new directors

BLACKSBURG - The alert today at Virginia Tech not only affected the school, but also all of Blacksburg.
Several people in downtown Blacksburg said the area was a complete ghost town. Lia Deoliveira used her down time to take care of business around her salon. Most of her day was actually spent tying up loose ends. “I got kind of scared and kind of nervous,” Deoliveira said. As she waited for information, she also waited for customers. Even though the sign said open, very few walked in. Virginia Tech’s alert also trickled down to a sushi restaurant around the block. “There are eight tables in here and they’re always full, but today the most we had were five at once,” said Ben Woody, one of the restaurant’s servers. Woody said students usually stop in after class, but says he understands the fact everyone was erring on the side of caution. “Whenever something happens, a lot of people in the Blacksburg area have a heighten sense of concern for their welfare here and anything like today that says ‘stay alert’ it makes everybody a little edgy,” Woody said. After looking like a ghost town for several hours, downtown finally picked up late in the afternoon. People could be seen walking from shop to shop and the street was once again packed with cars. Business owners are crossing their fingers the gun scare doesn’t keep customers aw... « previous next » |
