Investment products described as “guaranteed”, “protected” or “secure” may have to carry an explanation stating exactly what these terms mean, in the latest warning from the Financial Services Authority that financial companies are not properly advertising risk to consumers.

So-called structured products, which offer people exposure to the stock market with some level of protection, were being promoted “without any clear and adequate justification for the descriptions used”, the regulator said in a quarterly consultation paper on Monday. It has proposed introducing guidelines that would force financial services companies to explain the use of terms such as “guaranteed” in advertisements or fact sheets.

Fox & Friends Sunday repeatedly touted the “thousands” that attended a tax cut rally where Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-MN) spoke, going so far as to make the rally’s supposedly large turnout one of their top headlines today.
Yet according to Fox’s local affiliate, reporting from St. Paul, Minnesota, it was the rally’s low turnout that made it newsworthy. In an article titled “Hundreds Attend Anti-Tax Hike Rally At Capitol: Turnout Significantly Smaller Than Last Year’s,” Fox 9 News reported:

Hundreds gathered at the Minnesota Capitol to rally against a possible tax hike, but though it attracted the attention of some prominent lawmakers, the turnout didn’t meet expectations.

Organizers said that about 6,000 people turned out for last year’s event, but this year the headcount may have only touched 1,000.

Politico also noted the rally’s “sparse attendance” and highlighted the comments of a conservative blogger:

The [Tax Day] rally’s sparse attendance is attracting nearly as much attention as Bachmann’s remarks.

It’s Monsanto’s new refuge in the bag technology, which offers simplified planting without the need for a separate, structured refuge because the trait and refuge seed are blended into a one-bag system.
“This new refuge in the bag product will not require the 20% refuge that doesn’t have the newer genetics. So you’re able to plant the entire field with the refuge in the bag and not have to separate out two different varieties in the same field,” said Wentworth. “Typically with the refuge product in the past, you would go ahead and use a rootworm insecticide chemical, and this product will allow us not to use that product. I think it’s another means of being good stewards and using plant technology to allow us not to use man-made products. I think all us farmers are interested in doing a better job of being stewards of not just the soil but of the crop that we produce.”
